In Ayurveda, cleaning the tongue with a tongue cleaner (jivha nirlekhan) in the morning is a tradition that goes back thousands of years. It is a method that is as simple as it is effective. During the night, toxins and waste products accumulate on our tongue. The tongue cleaner is used to thoroughly remove the tongue coating that has formed overnight after brushing the teeth.
Here's how it works: Grasp the ends of the tongue cleaner and, with your mouth open, scrape the entire surface of your tongue a few times from back to front using light pressure. This prevents inflammation in the mouth and throat and neutralises odour-causing bacteria. Scraping also stimulates the digestive fire and the production of digestive enzymes.
